Keanu Reeves was left surprised when he made his return to his parked motorcycle only to find it had been in an accident! The star of The Private Lives of Pippa Lee and The Matrixlooked puzzled when he found a police officer waiting to inform him what had just happened to his new Norton bike.All in all it looks like Keanu took the news in stride. You can see him hop on his hog and see if it had survived and it looks like things will be ok.

Luckily our handsome hunk was not on board when all this went down!
Imagine how the person who hit it will feel when they find out they hit the Hollywood actors property?! If it was me, it would slightly be a blessing in disguise!

The actor, who arrived in LA the night before, celebrated his 47th birthday on Friday (September 2) - Happy Birthday, Keanu!

Keanu is in talks to direct and star in Man of Tai Chi, which he also wrote. Man of Tai Chi also stars Tiger Chen, a member of the kung fu team in The Matrix.

Thanks to Voltage Pictures website, a number of new images and the first poster for Mark L. Mann’s Generation Um… have hit the net. Starring Keanu Reeves, Adelaide Clemens and Bojana Novakovic, the film “follows a day in the life of John (Reeves) and his two beautiful cohorts as they live life on the fringe, immersed in sex, drugs and indecision. As they navigate their daily routine of bars, crowds and New York City living, they embark on a path of self-discovery.”

When I spoke to Reeves at last year’s Toronto Film festival, he told me:

“It takes place over 24 hours. You follow this character named John. It’s basically the relationship between him and two call girls. He’s the driver and he ends up stealing a video camera and hanging with them in an apartment. It’s kind of about the interpersonal dynamics of this family.”

Then, at last year’s AFM, I landed the official synopsis:

“generation Um…” follows a day in the life of John (Keanu Reeves) and his two beautiful cohorts, Mia and Violet, as they wander through their life, immersed in sex, drugs and indecision. When John steals a video camera, he finds inspiration in his directionless life. He turns the lens on Mia and Violet and the girls start to open up about their past and how it has informed their present lives. As they navigate their daily routine of bars, crowds and New York City living, they embark on a path of self-discovery.

Keanu Reeves gets a bad rap. It’s really easy to typecast him as a boring surfer dude with no emotion, but the fact of the matter is that in the right roles Reeves has shined, like in Point Break, Bill & Ted, and in the Matrix films. Sure he signs on for roles that just plain aren’t for him sometimes, but when he shows up for the right job, Reeves always pulls out an enjoyable performance.

Still, there's always time to make a change, and now in his 40s Reeves is looking forward to making his directorial debut with Man of Tai Chi, a movie he wrote and will also star in, according to The Wrap. We don't know much beyond the fact that he’ll star as the film’s villain, but it will be a martial arts film with stacks of action so high you can’t see the tops of them. Looking to revisit all of his training from The Matrix, where he learned nearly 200 martial arts move for the film, Reeves recently wrapped up 47 Ronin where he stars as a samurai looking for vengeance after his master’s murder, and will be following that up with Man of Tai Chi as long as he can line up the funding.

He is currently in negotiations with Village Roadshow and China Film Group, with whom he will hopefully get financing nailed down so they can get going with this soon as possible. No projected start date has been announced.

My latest project is as Historical Advisor for Universal Pictures for the forthcoming movie The 47 Ronin starring Keanu Reeves. It will be released in November 2012. Based on the famous story of the classic revenge attack in 1703, the story has been expanded to bring in fantasy elements and dramatic battles reminiscent of Lord of the Rings.

So should purists scoff at it as another example of Hollywood exaggeration?

Certainly not!
First, Japan has a long tradition of embellishing the story of the 47 Ronin, as will be explained in my forthcoming Osprey book, so we are in very good company.

Besides, in the souvenir shop in Banshu-Ako, home of the original 47 Ronin, you can buy a towel with each of the heroes shown in the guise of the children's character 'Hello Kitty'. Even Hollywood couldn't better that!

Second, all the fantasy figures you will see are firmly rooted in Japanese mythology, which gives it all an air of authenticity matched only by the amazing sets. I was involved early on in the design of the costumes, armour, weapons, flags, castles, temples and shrines, all of which are stunning.
As for other details, well, I am sworn to secrecy, but I have watched the filming and can guarantee that you are in for a treat.

As I said to the talented young Director Carl Rinsch only the other day, I am delighted at what they have done with my suggestions and have been proud to work on the movie.

Actor Keanu Reeves has penned an over-the-top anti-self-help book as part of a joke about his gloomy reputation.
Reeves has overcome a series of great personal tragedies, including losing his longtime girlfriend in a vehicular accident, prompting the media to label the star as a sad and lonely actor.
The Matrix hunk decided to poke fun at his image by writing a dramatic, but funny tome, called Ode to Happiness, which features a variety of depressing images and phrases.
He tells PerezHilton.com, "I was in my kitchen hanging out with my friend, and the radio was on - and this station was playing, like, an orgy of depressing, self-pitying, nostalgic music.
"It was so voluptuously horrible and I just started to write on this piece of paper, because I had this image of, you know, the moment when you take a bath, you light that candle, and you’re really just kind of depressed. It looks like Keanu Reeves has a sense of humor when it comes to his stereotyped sadness. According to The Guardian, the often glum actor has penned a book titled, 'Ode to Happiness.' But the actor's book is far from sunny.

"I draw a hot sorrow bath. In my despair room," reads one line.

Each page of the book features a line more somber than the last -- printed in large ink blot letters that look as though they've been smudged by falling tears. The book ends with a single black hole and the words, "It can always be worse."
Quick! Somebody offer this man a role in the next Reese Witherspoon romantic comedy -- that ought to cheer up this aching actor. But not so fast, ironically, the depressing literary work wasn't originally created with the intention to depress.

"I was in my kitchen hanging out with my friend Janey, and the radio was on," Reeves said in explaining the inception of his book. "And this station was playing, like, an orgy of depressing, self-pitying, nostalgic music ... It was so voluptuously horrible. And I just started to write on this piece of paper, because I had this image of, you know, that moment when you take a bath, you light that candle, and you're really just kind of depressed. And it was making Janey laugh so hard, I just kept going, piling on the self-pity."

So self-pity for the sake of laughter and happiness? Okay, we get it -- a satirical self-help book of sorts.

Once the book was complete, Reeves was planning on keeping it on his bookshelf as merely a reminder of the good laugh but friends began demanding copies and Reeves decided to spread the joy -- or deep rooted depression -- to anyone with just over $50 to spare. So what's next for the comic disguised as a manic depressive? Reeves hopes to publish an equally dark book of poems.

"I'm considering another idea I call 'Haikus of Hope,'" Reeves pontificated. "Basically like, 'I want to kill myself,' and go from there."

Well folks, we knew this was going to happen sooner or later. One too many celebrities have placed a pen in their hands and written a book. In my despair room," I'm hoping this is a poor attempt at a metaphor because I think we're traveling down a dark and twisted tunnel that not even Alice could find her way out of. As if this world doesn't have enough depressing things to worry about, now we're expected to read about it for fun as well?

Again with the baths -- what kind of baths has this guy been taking? I find them very relaxing and refreshing, not morbid and depressing. Sounds like Dr. Depression needs to take a break from the end of the world movies (The Day the Earth Stood Still and Constantine to name a few) and get himself signed up for a rom-com STAT!

He famously inspired a whole internet meme after sitting down on a park bench looking a bit sad, but Keanu Reeves was looking rather happier when he was papped out on a date with a mystery companion last night.

The 46-year-old Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure star was laughing as he and his lady friend were confronted by the cameras as they left Nobu restaurant in London.

Both of them were dressed down for the date, in tatty denim and faded T-shirts and Keanu was clutching a motorbike helmet - although there was no sign of a Harley Davidson to match his T shirt.

Keanu has recently been linked to former co-star Charlize Theron, but hasn't had a serious relationship (that we all know about) since the tragic death of his partner Jennifer Syme in a car accident in 2001.

Let's hope we find out who his lovely looking date is soon.

A sprinkle of London love appears to have put a smile back on the face of Hollywood star Keanu Reeves after he was spotted on a date with a mystery brunette in Mayfair.

The habitually single Matrix actor broke with tradition and grinned for the cameras on Sunday – and the difference was the date on his arm.
The scruffy 46-year-old even waved as he led the mystery brunette from a meal at swanky Mayfair joint Nobu Berkeley St.
His date looked set for a breezy ride home as the actor was seen leading her away carrying his bike helmet.
The outing marks a change in fortune for Reeves, who has never married. His life was derailed ten years ago when his girlfriend, Jennifer Syme, died in a car crash. Before that, the couple battled heartache when their daughter Ava Archer was stillborn. In 2009, a paternity test cleared Reeves after a Canadian woman claimed he had fathered her four children, all in their twenties.
Last year there was hope that the screen heartthrob was set to move on after he was spotted with South African beauty Charlize Theron. The pair cowered from the camera flashes and appeared to be caught out by the chance run-in.
Their shy cuddle came shortly after the blonde broke up with long-term partner Stuart Townsend. The two stars have known each other for years after starring in The Devil’s Advocate in 1997 before teaming up for 2001’s Sweet November.
For now, Reeves will certainly be able to treat his new companion to many more meals in our capital as he is working here at the moment.
He is often seen around town, sometimes carrying scripts.

Talks between Warner Bros. and Keanu Reeves regarding his role in the studio’s adaptation of the manga-turned-anime, Akira, have come to an end with Reeves passing on the project. JoBlo broke the news of the deceased negotiations earlier today which quickly spawned questions concerning the film’s future at the studio. While I’ll stop short of projecting the film’s long-term outlook, for now we have confirmed the accuracy of the original report with the studio who reassures us that Reeves passing on the role has not killed the project which is set to be directed by Albert Hughes (The Hughes Brothers) from a rewritten script by Steve Kloves (the Harry Potter series).

Although the constant back-and-forth regarding Akira casting may appear to be a bleak sign for the project (a shortlist of names including Robert Pattinson and Chris Pine previously appeared here, with names like James Franco and Zac Efron being rumored here and here), it’s worthy to note that many high-profile/big-budget projects such as this have a difficult time getting off of the ground initially. As such, we should most likely expect Warner Bros. to begin courting another upper-echelon name to attach to the project in the near future. Earlier this month, it was revealed that Keanu Reeves was in talks to play Kaneda, the gang leader in the upcoming live-action "Akira" film. Warner Bros was hoping that having Reeves on board would better its chances of getting another A-lister to take the role of Tetsuo, the best friend.

JoBlo has now learned that Reeves has officially turned down the role, which will likely make many fans very happy. Warners quickly released a statement addressing allegations that the project, which has a budget of roughly $140 million and has Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) attached to direct, may be in trouble.

"Production on 'Akira' has not halted or been shut down, as the film has not yet been greenlit and is still very much in the development stage," said the studio. "The exploratory process is crucial to a project of this magnitude, and we will continue to sculpt our approach to making the best possible film."

The live-action version of Akira may actually be happening. After Warner Bros. secured a co-financer for the $230 million pricetag (Legendary Pictures, who just recently backed out of the deal), and Harry Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves turned in a rewrite of the script that had everyone eager to get going, producers began searching for their cast. Directors the Hughes brothers have been searching for an A-lister with global appeal to star in the flick (you don’t gamble that amount of money without ensuring that you’re gonna rake in serious international revenue), but for a while it seemed like they were searching in vain.
Now, Vulture reports that Keanu Reeves is in very early talks to take on the starring role in the film. Based upon the manga and the 1988 anime adaptation, Akira centers on teenager Shōtarō Kaneda and his quest to stop his friend Tetsuo from destroying Neo-Tokyo. Hit the jump for more on the project.

It seems like MGM and Jose Padihla are looking for a big name to take Peter Weller's iconic role in their upcoming RoboCop reboot. Rumor has it that Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp and Keanu Reeves are all being considered for the role, but even if that's true, we can't really know if any of them will likely take the role. Personally, I think they're all too niche to take it, but it seems that when it comes down to it, MGM wants someone recognizable in that suit.

I'm not really sure why they want such a big name headlining the reboot; the name should speak for itself. Padihla is looking to do a complete reboot, departing from the original, but there's really little insight as to why a name like Depp or Cruise would help that. Not to mention the idea that names like this are likely to not be attracted to this sort of project. You tend to look for names on their way up in these instances -- hello, Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man or Henry Cavil as Superman. As Screenrant points out, this may be a move to focus the story more on Alex Murphy before he becomes RoboCop to separate this rendition from the originals, but even if that's the case, big names aren't necessarily the answer. If they're looking to rely on back story, they should seek out up-and-comers or guys on the cusp of mega-stardom. With a franchise as well-known as RoboCop, adding in a name that many viewers have a preformed opinion about when they're likely to also hold strong opinions about the franchise itself is just too much. Give us an Ian Somerhalder or even a Jeremy Renner (though on second thought, he's in too many movies right now, let's give him a rest).

Audiences will go to the theater because of the hold the original has on them. Adding a big name will only serve as confusion, and likely, a point of contention for fans.

Now that MGM has hired director Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) and writer Josh Zetumer for the upcoming "Robocop" reboot, the studio is now focusing on casting.

According to Moviehole, MGM wants a major Hollywood actor on board and has approached Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves and Johnny Depp to play the lead role. The site says that the three actors are just part of a wish-list, which apparently doesn't contain any unknowns.

"Robocop" revolves around a cop brought back from death and drafted to become a remorseless and ruthless cyborg cop. That plan is subverted when suppressed memories of his past life come back to haunt him.

Keanu Reeves’ Dedication to Art Is No Mystery—Pt. 2

Keanu Reeves has embodied popular culture like few other actors, yet he’s retained a level of privacy that has enabled the media to label him “mysterious.” What is a mystery is how Reeves has managed to maintain an element of anonymity in a 24/7 world that denies even minor celebrities their time in the shade.

When I caught up with Reeves for a chat just prior to the U.S. opening of his latest film “Henry’s Crime,” it became clear this is a guy who is all about the work, about applying himself first and foremost to his role, and about ensuring that everyone on set is similarly geared.

By not declaring favorites just as keenly as not revealing others’ secrets — and by being open to all forms of artistic media — Reeves has become one of the most likable (and bankable) stars on the planet. With a box-office cume in the neighborhood of $2 billion, that Reeves gets billed — and sometimes belittled — as one of the “nicest” guys around seems to actually be an injustice to his dedication, application and honest enthusiasm to his work and the meaning of the projects he undertakes.

Reeves was in the Hungarian capital of Budapest when we talked, having just begun rehearsals for Carl Rinsch’s “47 Ronin,” an 18th-century samurai story based on a Japanese legend that co-stars Rinko Kikuchi.

MP: James Caan seems like he’s a constant source of stories. Was he like that while working, a full-time storyteller?

Reeves: Yeah, he’s very gracious. He’s such an alive guy. He loves contact, and he’s generous with himself and his stories. He doesn’t mind speaking about “The Godfather” — [he] speaks about how grateful he was for the role and his experience on the film. I asked him about “Rollerball,” [laughs] and he said, “Crazy movie, huh? Fantastic!”

MP: “The Cherry Orchard” by Anton Chekhov features as a play within this film. I know you did “Hamlet” on stage in Canada, but this reminded me of an interview you did 10 years ago with Charlie Rose, talking about how you’d love to do “Macbeth” onstage and had asked Werner Herzog to direct it.

Reeves: I haven’t reminded Werner yet that he said yes. Yeah, I’d love to do that role, would love to do it. I tried once. I did a reading in London with Roger Michell (“Notting Hill,” “Venus”) to see if we could work it out, but it didn’t work out. Maybe down the road.

I’m not sure, maybe I’m too old for the role, but it is Shakespeare, so you can do it whenever! You’ve reminded me, “Oh no! The spark is alive again!” It was Sacha’s idea for the play to be “The Cherry Orchard,” and then we started getting into the play and seeing the parallels. It was fun to act, to have the players do that, and it was great to be on the boards with 35mm cameras. Geez, I was just psyched to be doing Chekhov with Vera [Farmiga] — that was a good day. Obviously, it’s a translation, but as an actor it’s so open to play the pathos, the comedy and the drama of it, there’s a wonderful openness. It’s like he’s giving you a canvas and saying, “Go color it. Go make it your own. What do you find in it?” It’s fantastic.

MP: Listening to you talk about this, and recalling the way you spoke of “the birth of compassion” when discussing “The Matrix,” that thoughtfulness would suggest the logical next step for you would be directing.

Reeves: Yeah, it’s come up in the last five years. I think also in the process of working on “Henry’s Crime” and being part of the process in doing the script and being part of the collaboration on the physical production certainly added some momentum to that idea of directing. I think it’s just finding the right material to say yes to.

I think it would be thrilling to get that opportunity. You gotta really want to do it. It’s a different time commitment, absolutely. Malcolm and other directors would talk about actors, “You basically come in here and do your thing, and it’s basically five-to-one.” That is, an actor can do five projects to a director’s one, but they also get to do “that,” to see a creation all the way through, and that must have certain rewards and pleasures, and I’m curious to find out.

MP: Speaking of exercising other artistic muscles, James Franco has just worked on an art exhibit with Gus Van Sant using leftover footage from “My Own Private Idaho.” Franco is managing to go back and forth between all sorts of endeavors at the moment. You had music (Dogstar), stage (“Hamlet”) and screen happening at one point. What do you think of his trajectory?

Reeves: Watching what he’s doing from the outside seems great and creative. I’d like to see the work he did with “Idaho.” My own experience with the film is filled with such great memories, and loss, and it’d be special to see my old friends again in a different way.

Keanu Reeves plans to make his directing debut on the kung-fu flick Man of Tai Chi. Reeves also tells MTV that he plans to play the villain in the movie, which would be set in the present day but recall classic kung-fu films. And the film won’t lack for kung-fu fighting:

“There’s 18 fights. We’ve timed it out. It’s about 40 minutes of fighting,” he said. “I want to make a good, solid kung fu movie. Good story, good plot — but let’s get some good kung fu going!”

Hit the jump for more details on the project. Reeves is currently shooting on Carl Rinsch’s 47 Ronin, which is due out in 3D on November 21, 2012 and centers on a group of former samurai avenging the murder of their lord.

Reeves says that Man of Tai Chi is set as a bilingual production:

“We want to do it in Chinese and English, do it as kind of a co-production with CFG perhaps, which is a Chinese film group, kind of a studio. It’s tricky.”

The “tricky” part most likely refers to not only to the international nature of the project, but the notorious Chinese censors who will let Reeves know what he can and can’t put in his movie.

It's been months since we last heard anything about Bill & Ted 3, though it seems the project is still moving forward. Keanu Reeves recently revealed in an interview that he expects the script to be done in six weeks.

He also revealed that Bill & Ted 3 will tie into the end of Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, with the guys now in their 40s and still not having written the song that saves the world. Here's what he had to say below.

"I believe the writers are six weeks away from a draft. No pressure, guys! When we last got together, part of it was that Bill and Ted were supposed to have written the song that saved the world, and it hasn't happened. So they've now become kind of possessed by trying to do that. Then there's an element of time and they have to go back."

Back in September, we reported that Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, the original writers of both Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, are writing the script.

Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey actually ends with Bill and Ted getting lost on the way to the first-ever gig on Mars. It is not known if that element of being lost in space will play a factor in the storyline at this time.

Bill & Ted 3 is in development and stars Alex Winter, Keanu Reeves.

We've been hearing for months - if not years - that Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter will reunite for a possible Bill and Ted 3. Back in September Reeves expressed hope for the project and Winter confirmed that the project was in the works, but one major question still loomed: what would the sequel be about? Today we have an idea.

MTV has learned that not only is the first draft of Bill and Ted 3 about two months away, but has also divulged a few details about the story. Speaking with Reeves, who is currently promoting his new film Henry's Crime, the actor said that the movie would spin-off from the way things ended in the first sequel, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, when the duo's band, Wyld Stallyns, becomes known as the best in the universe. Said Reeves,

"When we last got together, part of it was that Bill and Ted were supposed to have written the song that saved the world, and it hasn't happened. So they've now become kind of possessed by trying to do that. Then there's an element of time and they have to go back."I feel like it should be noted that while Reeves went on to have a massively successful career since the stoner time travel movie came out in the 80s, Winter's work has consisted mostly of bit parts and voice-over work. It will be interesting to see how these two characters have changed in the twenty years since we last saw them. It's just too bad that George Carlin isn't still around to play Rufus.

While I’m going to have trouble believing that a third Bill & Ted movie is a reality until cameras actually start rolling on it, Keanu Reeves says that he expects the writers to send him and co-star Alex Winter a draft in about six weeks. Reeves also told MTV that the film will be based on the events of Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey:

Hit the jump for my thoughts on the potential sequel.

I’m a bit confused by Reeves’ description of the plot. Are Bill and Ted in their mid-40s and still trying to come up with a hit song? Isn’t that a little sad? I think a more interesting story would be to see Bill and Ted as the revered rockers in the “future” and struggling to figure out how to rule. The first two movies were all about leading the eponymous heroes to their destiny. I think if they’re planning to do a sequel, an interesting take would be to see Bill and Ted having attained that destiny and moving forward from there.

But I’m on board with a new Bill & Ted movie simply because I think it could be delightfully goofy to see these characters again played by the same actors when it’s been twenty years since the last movie.

SHEPPERTON studios is continuing to build Japanese-style buildings on an external film set, despite an application seeking permission for the work being deferred at a council planning meeting.

Executives at the studios, in Studios Road, have begun construction on the Backlot site, rumoured to be for Keanu Reeves' new film 47 Ronin, even though the development has not yet been formally approved by councillors.

Richard Smith-Ainsley, ward councillor for Laleham and Shepperton Green, said: "The original recommendation before the committee was to refuse the application, and amongst other issues to serve an enforcement notice to require that a part of the site being used as an external film set must be reinstated to its previous conditions."

The planning application was recommended for refusal by Spelthorne councillors at the meeting last Wednesday, but it was deferred to be considered at a later date after a request by Shepperton Studios.

Councillor Smith-Ainsley said: "An important consideration for not accepting the studios' request to defer the application was that the archaeological works that they were mandated to carry out before any development had begun were not carried out. The county council archaeologist produced a late letter stating that he considered that any damage that would be done had already been done, so this reduced the significance of the main reason for not deferring the application. We expect the studios to resubmit their application soon and the planning committee will then determine it."

Andrew Smith, director of Shepperton Studios, said: "We have been working with the council and statutory consultees in relation to the technical matters, including archaeology, ecology, transport and flooding since the submission of the application for temporary use of the Shepperton Studios Backlot and an adjacent site to the north west, for the construction of film sets and workshops for a temporary period of seven months, to meet the needs of a specific film production.

"In order to fully address these issues we asked for a deferment, which was granted."

Keanu Reeves doesn't exclusively star in big-budget sci-fi flicks. Every now and then he takes a break from movies requiring a fleet of stuntmen to act in smaller, more intimate stories. One such film is 'Henry's Crime' and Cinematical is happy to bring you its poster premiere (check it out in full below).

Directed by Malcom Venville ('44 Inch Chest'), 'Henry's Crime' is a bank-heist comedy co-starring Vera Farmiga, James Caan, Judy Greer, Peter Stormare and Fisher Stevens. Moving Pictures Film and TV will be opening the film April 8 in New York before expanding around the country on April 15. As for the film's plot specifics, the official press release says it best:

Working the night shift as a toll collector on a lonely stretch of highway in Buffalo, New York, Henry (KEANU REEVES) is a man seemingly without ambition, dreams or purpose; a man sleepwalking his way through life. He gets his wakeup call early one morning when he becomes an unwitting participant in an ill-conceived bank heist.

Rather than give up the names of the real culprits, Henry takes the fall and goes to jail. There, he meets the irrepressible Max (JAMES CAAN), a con man who's grown far too comfortable with the familiarity and security of his 'idyllic' life behind bars, but one who also helps plant an idea in Henry's mind which will change his life forever: for a man to find his purpose, he must first have a dream.

Upon his release one year later, Henry finds his purpose. Having done the time, he decides he may as well do the crime. Discovering a long forgotten bootlegger's tunnel which runs from the very same bank to a theater across the alleyway, he convinces the reluctant Max to file for his long overdue parole -- and then recruits his former cellmate to help stage a robbery.

Their plan is simple: by infiltrating the theater and its current production of Chekhov's, The Cherry Orchard, the unlikely duo will buy just enough time to dig their way to the adjacent bank vault and drive off with their loot. Unfortunately that plan also includes Henry taking the lead role in the play, where he finds himself slowly falling for the production's mercurial leading lady, Julie (VERA FARMIGA).

With Keanu Reeves set to star in Carl Erik Rinsch‘s 47 Ronin, by my math, still leaves about 46 Ronin to be cast. The 3D production is heating up and Variety is reporting that four more roles have been cast. Japanese actors Tadanobu Asano, Kou Shibasaki, Rinko Kikuchi and Hiroyuki Sanada have all joined the film.
Asano is familiar to film geeks for his roles in Ichi the Killer, Mongol and Zatoichi among many others, plus he’s got a two big movies coming up, Thor and Battleship. Shibasaki was in Go, Battle Royale and the original One Missed Call. Kikuchi is known to American audiences from her leading roles in Babel and The Brothers Bloom and Sanada is best known for roles in The Last Samuari, Sunshine and as Dogen in the final season of Lost. Ken Watanabe was rumored to be a part of the film, but that is still just a rumor.

47 Ronin is a well-known story. Extremely well-known. According to the IMDB, there are no less than 14 films who have shared this title at some point during their production. Here’s how Peter described the film a few months ago:

Based on a true 18th Century Japanese story, the film follows a band of samurai swordsmen who are shamed into becoming the titular ronin — a Japanese word meaning lordless samurai, and must avenge the death of their master. The construct a huge plan and sacrifice everything to see it through.

And screenwriter Chris Morgan, who wrote the last three Fast and Furious films as well as Wanted, described the film as a “great, Gladiator-esque, 300-like big action movie with samurai and ninja.”

All that said, casting well-respected and talented Japanese actors such as these would certainly make it seem like this project is headed in the right direction. While some are more recognizable than others, each already had a pretty impressive Hollywood resume that will only be bolstered by this film. I’m suddenly much more excited about 47 Ronin.

Universal Pictures announced today that principal photography begins March 14 on 47 Ronin, the new epic 3D fantasy-adventure inspired by ancient Japan’s most enduring tale. Keanu Reeves leads the cast as Kai, an outcast who joins Oishi (Hiroyuki Sanada), the leader of the 47 Ronin. Together they seek vengeance upon the treacherous overlord who killed their master and banished their kind. Studios handing big films to untested directors

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Hollywood loves discovering new talent. But its passion for developing emerging filmmakers has lately strayed into large-scale, downright risky terrain.

Case in point: Universal is in the process of handing director Carl Rinsch a $170 million budget for "47 Ronin," a 3D samurai revenge story starring Keanu Reeves that will begin shooting March 14 in Budapest. Rinsch's resume includes a popular short film and a Heineken commercial -- but no features.

And he's far from the only fresh-faced director stepping into the big-budget fray. Disney gave commercials helmer Joseph Kosinski close to $200 million for "Tron: Legacy." Universal recently hired first-timer Rupert Sanders to helm the $100 million-plus "Snow White and the Huntsman." Relative newbies Marc Webb, who's shooting Sony's "The Amazing Spider-Man," and Daniel Espinosa, who's helming Universal's action thriller "Safe House," took on the potential blockbusters with little previous feature work.

It's not an entirely new phenomenon, but for several reasons the scale and justifications behind the hires have changed. During the 1990s, commercial and music video directors such as David Fincher ("Alien 3," 1992), Michael Bay ("Bad Boys," 1995), Gore Verbinski ("Mousehunt," 1997) and McG ("Charlie's Angels," 2000) made the jump to features, but most of them did so with comparatively modest budgets.

During the past five years, though, technology has enabled rookie directors to hone their skills via FinalCut Pro, digital-video cameras and other state-of-the-art effects tools from a young age, prompting budget-wary studios to salivate over what they can put on screen for a price. Gareth Edwards, for instance, made his indie sci-fi film "Monsters" for a few hundred thousand dollars, even though it looked much more expensive. He's now up to direct "Godzilla" for Warner Bros.

"It's a reflection on the innovation of emerging filmmakers," says Anonymous Content manager Michael Sugar, who represents Webb and Kosinski. "You're looking at people like Fede Alvarez, who made a short film ("Panic Attack!") for $300, put it on YouTube, and it looks like it was made for $20 million." Alvarez, an Anonymous client, was hired by Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures to develop a sci-fi feature.

More than ever before, the short-film and commercial environment has become a playground to use up-to-the-minute tech to create feature-film calling cards. Sanders, "District 9" co-writer-director Neill Blomkamp and Noam Murro -- recently hired by Fox to direct the fifth "Die Hard" -- all did spots for recent Halo video game campaigns, a gig that has become as coveted as any debut film job because it often becomes a higher-profile entry into features.

Ad-world veterans also tend to be more comfortable making presentations in front of dozens of studio execs, and to be handy with creating the rip reels, animatics and annotated screenplays that the studios now want to see. These days, when execs say yes to a spec package, they aren't saying yes to development but to a movie, with a budget, detailed vision and release date.

"If you look at the way movies are being sold into the studios, whether it's "Safe House" or "All You Need Is Kill" or "Snow and the Seven" -- those are spec screenplays that were either sold in with a director or developed to the point where they were movies," says Management 360 manager-producer Darin Friedman, who represents "Kill" writer D.W. Harper and director Adam Berg.

At the same time, the screenwriting community has largely abandoned the spec approach -- what was for a long time Hollywood's prime idea factory. In the last few years, studios have made brutal trims to slates and development overhead. Filmmakers are now bypassing writer-provided original material by building a creative pipeline to funnel their own spec packages directly to producers and execs.

Alvarez's short film got him noticed all over town. Berg's short "Carousel," made for Philips TV, had him up for the job of helming the big-budget "X-Men" spinoff "Deadpool" for Fox. James Mather and Stephen St. Leger's short "Prey Alone" led to their writing and directing the sci-fi actioner "Lockout" for Luc Besson's EuropaCorp and FilmDistrict.

Rather than scrape together financing for a small indie, a visionary director can simply send a link to his short to someone in the industry, and everyone's seen it within an hour. The heat generated from a viral explosion can put an auction-like target on a filmmaker.

"Carl Rinsch had been kicking around for years, but when he made (the 2010 short) "The Gift," it got sent around and it created a frenzy," Friedman says. "That doesn't happen without that perfect storm of the right idea executed well, with the technology to share it virally."

Studios want and need movies, but they have less and less interest in developing them internally. From multiple accounts, rookie filmmakers are put through their paces by nervous studios before a green light. But by choosing to hire unproven talent, studios are also getting less expensive filmmakers that are potentially easier to control and can be loyal to the studio if the film is a hit.

Blomkamp had only about $30 million but made "District 9" seem a lot bigger. When it grossed $211 million worldwide, the path widened for other first-time visionaries, and Blomkamp is now directing the $125 million "Elysium" for Sony.

But the strategy is not without risk. Sony distributed Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's Oscar-winning debut "The Lives of Others" via Sony Pictures Classics. But when the studio gave him $100 million to make "The Tourist" with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, it grossed only $67 million domestically amid critical pans (the film did better overseas, grossing $163 million).

And as Rinsch goes into production on "Ronin," he might want to take stock of first-timer Kinka Usher, a Directors Guild of America award-winning commercials veteran to whom Universal gave $70 million in 1999 to make "Mystery Men." The superhero spoof grossed just $33 million globally, and Usher has been making commercials ever since.

Hot on the heels of a warm critical reception in the U.K. come three exclusive stills from the upcoming Keanu Reeves starrer Henry’s Crime, a romantic caper about a wrongfully imprisoned man (Keanu, natch) who decides he might as well pull the heist he was accused of upon parole. Hey, why not? Hit the jump for your full look at James Caan, Vera Farmiga, and one of Keanu’s brightest scene partners to date!

More context: Keanu is Henry, who enlists James Caan’s con man (or Caan man, if you will) to help rob the bank in question. Caan gets Keanu a role in a Chekhov play at the theater next door, acting opposite Vera Farmiga, hence the period costuming. Between rehearsals, they dig a tunnel, hence the Great Keanu Beard. looks as if Keanu Reeves’ bombshell that the Wachowski Brothers are working on two sequels to their Matrix trilogy was a big fat hoax. Reports surfaced earlier this week that the actor, who starred as Neo in the first three Matrix movies, lifted the lid on the upcoming sequels during a recent Q&A session at the London International School of Performing Arts.

Reeves was supposed to have revealed that he met with the Wachowskis over Christmas, when they apparently showed him “a two-picture script treatment that would see him return to the world of The Matrix as Neo."

Oh, and they’d already chatted to James Cameron about releasing the new instalments in 3D.

However, a rep for Reeves – who has indeed been in London for the past few weeks – told Playlist that “none of it is true...he did not speak nor get an award from the from the London International School of Performing Arts.”

While there is a decent chance you’ll one day be able to file this under “Internet movie rumors that never amounted to anything,” we’d be remiss not to at least pass this along. A report has filed in from a “Q & A” at the London International School of Performing Arts which claims that star Keanu Reeves spoke at moderate length about returning to The Matrix for two more sequels. Per the account, Reeves claims to have had lunch with The Wachowski Brothers over Christmas during which they briefed him on a two-film treatment they had finished for the Matrix franchise.

Obviously, keep in mind that the purported eye-witness account of the “Q & A” is, as of yet, unconfirmed. Nevertheless, if you’d like to here more about what Reeves purportedly had to say about reprising his role as Neo, hit the jump. [Update: It looks as if the lead in the write-up has been proven true as sources from both the Reeves camp and the London International School of Performing Arts claim the "Q & A" never even happened.]

The report sparking all of this Matrix sequel debate comes from AICN who posted the news based upon an e-mail sent to them by a reader. Within the account, the reader (who refers to himself as “El-Nino”) claims that Reeves told the audience that he feels he has an obligation to fans of The Matrix to deliver a movie worthy of the game-changing franchise to which it would belong.

Moreover, “El-Nino” also claims that The Wachowski’s have already met with James Cameron so as to weigh the pros-and-cons of making the films in 3D. All of this in mind, while Reeves apparently believes that the treatments presented to him by The Wachowski’s will “truly revolutionize the action genre like the first movie,” the report claims that he will not meet with The Wachowki’s again until they finish work on their new film Cloud Atlas.

To reiterate, as of now all of this speculation is based purely upon an unconfirmed report. Nevertheless, this is currently the biggest rumor we’ve heard concerning The Matrix since the trilogy wrapped up in 2003. As of now, we’re doing some digging of our own into the report and will have more info as it becomes available.

Keanu Reeves was feeling particularly chatty at the London School of Performing Arts last weekend, apparently telling students of his plans for further Matrix sequels.
Delivering a keynote speech to publicise his upcoming comedy Henry's Crime at the university, Keanu opened the floor to a quick Q&A session, in which the actor was unusually candid regarding the forthcoming projects of his Matrix director, the Wachowski's.
Keanu first revealed (as he also did on the Graham Norton Show) that he is currently preparing for a 3D Samurai movie, of which he is in month two of a six month training programme. The actor also mentioned that he's committed to a possible threequel for the 'Bill and Ted' franchise that launched his career in his teens.
When asked about the Matrix franchise, Keanu said he had met with the directors, the Wachowski's, who had told him that they were working on a two-picture treatment to continue the story arc of Keanu's iconic Neo character.
Keanu apparently told the audience that the Wachowski's are apparently discussing the pro's and con's of 3D with Avatar director James Cameron and that he felt he had an 'obligation' to deliver a movie worthy of the franchise. In other words, something unlike The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions, we'll bet.
The star also told writers in the audience to focus on new ideas, which would be 'worth their weight in gold'. To provide an example, he then told the audience that Warner Bros had just bought a script for a modern retelling of Robin Hood for $5m, the highest in the studio's history. The modern day 'Hood' is to be headlined by Will Smith. Actor Keanu Reeves says he believes it is difficult to link gun violence in movies to violence in society.
The American actor was speaking to the BBC on the release of his new film, 'Henry's Crime' in which he plays a bank robber who pointedly does not use any guns for his heists.
When if comes to violence in his own movies, the star of the Matrix films says "I'm not going to be frivolous with it, I'm not going to be pornographic with it" but also said he doesn't think a film can be linked to violent crimes committed.

Keanu Reeves has joked people are “guaranteed” to want to have sex after watching his new movie Henry’s Crime.

The actor plays the title role in the film, about an aimless man who serves time in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. Keanu admits the movie has had an unexpected affect on cinemagoers, with many telling him it made them appreciate their loved ones.
In fact, some of his fans have confessed they wanted to embark on a lovemaking marathon after it had ended – prompting Keanu to consider using their reactions as a promotional ploy.
“It's a really good afternoon film. I've had a couple of people come out after it and say, 'Wow, we saw your film and we just wanna go have sex now.' Maybe it just makes you wanna hold someone close. Of all the comments I've heard, that's my favourite,” he said in an interview with British newspaper The Guardian. "Yeah! 'Watch Henry's Crime! Guaranteed sex! If your girl doesn't put out after this, we'll give you half your money back!'"
Keanu admits he is a perfectionist when it comes to making movies and often insists on redoing certain scenes several times. The 46-year-old star wishes he could have worked with late director Stanley Kubrick, who was renowned for asking his cast to repeat scenes until he was satisfied. Keanu claims he is such a perfectionist, he may even have been too much for Stanley to cope with.
"I would've been his wet dream,” Keanu laughed. “After take 400, Kubrick would've been, 'All right, cut!' and I'd be, like, 'Stanley, can I do one more?' 'Whaaat?' 'Look, I know I'm just drinking this glass of water, but I think I can find another side to this. Let's just do one more, OK?' 'Arrrgh, OK, Reeves.' You know what? I would've broken Kubrick. Keanu Reeves, star of Point Break and the Matrix movies, has finally opened up - about the "Sad Keanu" meme.
The meme started after a paparazzi photo of him eating a sandwich on a bench, on his own in New York -- already, aww -- started to circulate on the web. The image was (repeatedly) photo-shopped with Reeves eating pigeons and sitting in generally sad situations. Most versions ended up on the "Sad Keanu" Tumblr site, and there was even a (unofficial) Cheer Up Keanu Reeves Day on Jun. 15 last year.

Keanu Reeves has thanked director Kathryn Bigelow for making him an action star.

The actor got one of his first breaks in the movie industry with his lead role in the director's 'Point Break' in 1991 - which paved the way for him to take the lead role as Neo in 'The Matrix' trilogy - and he says he owes it to the filmmaker for believing in him.

He said: "'Point' Break was one of those wonderful surprises. I hear it wasn't such an easy sell for Kathryn. Her saying, 'No, really, he can be an action guy. No, really.'

"It was such a leap of faith. Thank you, Kathryn! You changed my life!"

The 'Henry's Crime' star also thanked another filmmaker, Bernado Bertolucci, for giving him another break by casting him as Siddhartha in the film 'Little Buddha', allowing him to show his depth and help shake preconceptions of him as dumb, because of his slacker character in 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure'.

He said: "When Bertolucci called, well, that was a nice day. Yes, indeed. I've had a couple of breaks, which is what we all need. You know, we're just dust in the wind, after all."

Keanu is considering reprising his role as Bill S. Preston Esquire for a third instalment in the 'Bill and Ted' franchise, subject to a good script.

He confirmed writers are working on the project, adding: "We'll see what they come up with."

The star of blockbuster films Speed and The Matrix has been based in Britain for seven months working on a new project.
He tells Colin Paterson on BBC Radio 5 live that during that time he's caught cricket fever.
"I just like the way it quietly builds until that one event," Reeves tells 5 live Breakfast.
The star says he's also been watching the Ashes. "What was that bowler's name? Was it Tremont? Tremlett? When he got those two wickets... that was nice!"

Keanu Reeves: Not so ordinary a career

In a 20-year career he's done action, comedy, thrillers, Shakespeare and sci-fi - yet many still seem to believe Keanu Reeves is a carbon copy of his character Ted from the movie which made him famous - Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Ted's favourite phrase is "bodacious, dude". Reeves, 47, describes working on a Chekhov play as "a treat, it's a sundae, an ice-cream sundae".
Chekhov features heavily in Reeves's latest film, Henry's Crime which he himself developed over four years with producers and writer Sacha Gervasi. Also starring James Caan and Vera Farmiga, it opened the Marrakech Film Festival this week.
"It's about a guy who is sent to prison for trying to rob a bank, which he didn't actually do," Reeves explains.
"When he gets out, he decides to rob the bank for real now he's done the time. To do that he has to use an underground passageway from the bank to the next door theatre, where they're producing a version of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard."
He pauses for a moment before adding: "My friends say it's an existential rom-com crime caper and I think that's spot on."
To those who actually meet Reeves, he's more like Neo, the role of the Chosen One he played three times in The Matrix series, a character he's described as "a very, very honourable man".
Thoughtful and sometimes intense, he explains the varied parts he has chosen during his career, which range from Point Break's surfing cop Johnny Utah, to hustler Scott Favor in Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho - a film he shared with his friend, the late River Phoenix.
"I love doing different genres and different ways of movie-making, whether it's lead or supporting roles," says Reeves.
After breakthrough roles in 1987's Parenthood with Steve Martin, followed by the Bill and Ted franchise, action is what he is best known for - from The Matrix to 1994's Speed with Sandra Bullock, as well as in Point Break where he plays a rookie police officer chasing a gang of surfers breaking into banks to fund their lifestyle.
So what's more fun to play - a man trying to catch bank robbers, or a man attempting to rob a bank himself, as in Henry's Crime?
"Actually robbing the bank itself," he replies, smiling. "It's a different kind of stress."
Reeves went straight from doing Point Break to playing Don Juan in Kenneth Branagh's version of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, and he says he wants to do stage acting, be it Chekhov or Shakespeare.
"You have no idea how much fun it is to perform. it's so interpretive and there's so much freedom in it," he enthuses.
Is it better than making films?
"No, I had a good thing in Henry's Crime where I could have the best of both worlds," is the diplomatic answer.
Apart from The Matrix series, the last decade has been pretty low key for Reeves. A romantic drama, The Lakehouse with Sandra Bullock, plus a lot of sci-fi - through A Scanner Darkly, The Day The Earth Stood Still and 2005's Constantine - of which only the last got good reviews. However, Reeves has said in the past that when the critics bite, "it's not like I run outside and fall into a catastrophic depression".
In order to do a project now, the actor says it has to hold his attention.
"It's interest, right? Often it's not you seeking a project, it just shows up. So now I'm developing various things, and next year I am going to be doing a Samurai film, called 47 Ronin. It's a Japanese story from the 1700s about war, and hopefully love."
A committed Buddhist, his life philosophy could be seen in the very personal Henry's Crime, where Henry, a dazed-looking tollbooth operator, goes to prison for a crime he didn't commit in order to change his life. Sometimes, he believes, life calls for something outrageous in order to shake things up.
"It's an allegory, and a fable. You have to change your life if you're not happy, and wake up if things aren't going the way you want."
However much he has done to outrun the character of Ted it looks like 21 years later he may be about to embrace him one more time. Though he won't confirm it, rumours abound that Reeves and Alex Winter, who played Bill, have been talking about doing Bill and Ted 3 for years.
What Reeves will talk about is the thought of seeing Bill and Ted in 3D, or if at some point The Matrix may be re-released as a 3D film.
"It would be interesting to see what you could do with them," he muses. "For example, it would be cool to see Bill and Ted as holograms, and you could have some kind of kung fu moves breaking out of the screen in 3D in The Matrix.
"They're almost sure to remake nearly everything in 3D in our generation, although they're still figuring out how to use it. It'll be like all those Turner Classic movies being re-released in Technicolor."
